The first European settlement, Mewburn Park pastoral
run, occupied the area between the Macalister and Thomson rivers from the 1840s.
From this the Tinamba district was surveyed for selection in 1862; initially
selectors were sustained by selling produce to gold miners passing through from
Maffra to the diggings at Donnelly's Creek and the Jordan. The erection of
a hotel in 1874 and the arrival of the railway in 1883, with its station and
sale yards, saw a small settlement develop. By the 1930s there was a
store, school, community hall and church. Several large estates were
subdivided early in the 20th century; Tinamba was one of the first districts
made available to Soldier Settlers after WWI.
Today the district is sustained by a productive dairying
industry; the Tinamba Tavern is a well known feature with interesting
Dutch connections. There is a range of accommodation as well within a 15km
radius.
