The Beet Sugar Industry 1894 to 1948
Chapters outline the
development, success and
final closure of the industry; with a new photographic
section.

The Maffra Sugar
Beet Company was registered in 1896 and the factory completed in
1898. After only two seasons the company was bought out by
the Victorian Government, which then operated the industry, mostly
successfully, until 1948.
The district's Closer Settlement schemes and the building of
Glenmaggie Weir were closely associated
with beet growing and their developments were as a
direct result of satisfying the industry's requirements.
