Track 96 north of Briagolong |
The Freestone Creek, Lees
Creek and Granite Creek areas were the location of a number of alluvial gold
mines. These were first discovered in the mid-1860s and though not highly
profitable, continued to be worked into the twentieth century.
Track 96 follows the original supply
route from Briagolong to Dargo, passing the old gold locations, where traces of
gold may still be found.

Black Snake Creek
near Dargo |
The Black Snake Reef, some eight miles from Dargo,
was prospected along with many others in the first rushes in and around
Dargo. The Kong Meng Company was formed in 1867 to take over the
earlier claims. There were
occasional attempts to resurrect the mines as late as the 1930s.
A camp site and walking track to the mines are
available for visitors today.
